Emergency & Urgent Care
Change text size: A A A

The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) provides two full-service Emergency Departments (General and Birchmount campuses) that offer around the clock urgent care. Every year, approximately 100,000 people are treated in TSH’s emergency departments — making ours one of the busiest emergency services in the country. Upon arriving in Emergency, all patients are assessed by a triage nurse, who places patients in priority based on the severity of their condition.

In 2009, TSH opened its new Emergency Department in the West Wing of the General campus. Housed in TSH’s brand new Emergency and Critical Care Centre, the new Emergency Department includes two triage stations, five separate care zones, new infection control and isolation protocols, state-of-the-art equipment and private examination rooms.

TSH also works closely with After-Hours Clinics that provide non-emergency care for patients who need to see a doctor outside of regular office hours. We also implemented a Fast Track Unit in the Emergency Department to better facilitate and enhance the care of those who present themselves to Emergency but require less urgent care.

Every day, hundreds of people visit our emergency departments. At times, staff and equipment are stretched to the limit. When this happens, people with minor injuries and illnesses may have to wait several hours while others with more serious problems are treated first.
